Led by founder members (songwriters and multi-instrumentalists) Andrew Levy and Simon Bartholomew, were at the head of emergent Acid Jazz movement alongside the likes of Young Disciples and Jamiroquai. Their debut single, the celebrated club classic Got To Give found a home at Chrysalis Records before the band signed to Acid Jazz Records in 1989 quickly releasing the self-titled debut album which was then picked up in the US by legendary hip-hop label Delicious Vinyl.
Spawning the Top Three R&B hit Never Stop the album saw the Heavies break through across the Atlantic, winning an MTV award and inhabiting the R&B album chart for the best part of twelve months. That debut proved influential within hip-hop circles, seeing them joined onstage by A Tribe Called Quest, and recording the collaborative Heavy Rhyme Experience album with amongst others Kool G Rap, Gang Starr and Main Source. The debut went gold in the UK and its follow ups both went platinum, in the process the scored 16 Top 40 hits including Dream Come True, Stay This Way, Midnight At The Oasis, Sometimes and Dream On Dreamer.
